Being discontented can actually have advantages. Provided that you are not clinically depressed, you can use discontent to light a fire beneath you and promote change.
Though the popular wisdom is that having a sunny outlook is key to having better outcomes in life, a recent study showed that the curmudgeons among us might actually be more successful in the long run.
Why is that you might ask?
Why is discontent motivating at times?
Discontented people are eager for change. They are not satisfied with the status quo. They are in a constant internal battle figuring out how to improve themselves and therefore their situations.
Some of my most productive times in life have been when I am at my most discontent. Whenever a situation makes me unhappy, my first instinct is to figure out how to either remove the source or improve on it.
Sometimes I look back at the big things I have accomplished under duress and wonder how I ever had the courage to do them.
In contrast, whenever I am super content, I get super lazy. I lay around like a big fat bear in a happy stupor.
Guess what’s not happening at that time?
New ideas. New accomplishments. Fresh thoughts on how to improve my life.
So the next time you are in a bad situation- be it a job, relationship, friendship or lifestyle- use that time for improvement.
Figure out what it is about your situation that is making you unhappy and take steps to change it.
Discontent is an opportunity. Discontent is your life signaling to you that you can do better.
Don’t let yourself become apathetic and dejected whenever you feel unhappy. Use that motivation that comes from dissatisfaction to turn things around.
You just may find that your season of discontent morphs into your season of bloom.
